Hey Donna,
there is a great link in the teachers notes of Dan Sultan on ABC radio performing a track solo and talking about his music. Here is the link to the mp3 file.
Also head over to the Artist Interviews page to check out some videos of the Big Notes artists talking about being inspired to write songs of change.
Our excursion to Big Notes on Wednesday June 16th was definately worth while. I must say that when we arrived, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I walked in, overwhelmed with the amount of schools present, prepared to hear artists I’d never even heard of. However, I walked out glad to’ve shared the experience with so many people, with the names of the artists burned into my brain.
Sitting in Hamer Hall, i felt quite inspired and even teary at some stages. The experience was so amazing, and couldn’t be enjoyed any other way. I felt priviledged to have been sitting in that seat, watching so many great artists perform for us. I admired the courage the artists displayed, to have the ability to perform in front of such a large audience in their most judgemental stage of the lifespan.
I was in awe the whole time, and I can’t really put it into words. It was by far one of the most enjoyable excursions I’ve ever attended with Presentation College Windsor, and I will definately not take it for granted.
I really enjoyed during our excursion to Big Notes. From the first to the last act the performances were genuine and amazing to watch. They all sang about real things that have/are affecting the world and them personally, not just shallow things that mean nothing. It was really inspiring to see all these different people perform from their heart, and learn how music has changed their lives. I loved hearing from the artists as well as their music, which told us more than they could ever say with words. I especially liked the workshop with Kutcher Edwards, it was surreal listening to his stories and seeing where his ideas come from. I truly think I gained a lot from this event. [:
June 16 Big Notes excursion was a wonderful experience and I had a really great time listening to all the music and performances. I especially enjoyed Kutcha Edwards’ performance and having his mother and father there in spirit. The photographs had a huge impact on his performance. It was great to hear what the other artists had to say and all their experiences and love for music. The last song they sung, Get Up Stand Up by Bob Marley was a good choice because the message in the song was very meaningful. I really enjoyed my time
My school, Presentation College Windsor , organised for our music class to have an excursion to the Big notes concert last Wednesday and truthfully it was one of the best excursions that I have went on while in high school. It was an amazing concert with extraordinary performances by wonderful artists. I would like to personally thank the artists that took the time to perform for us and also the people who helped organise and co-ordinate the event as it was an experience I believe I will always remember.
After the concert we had a chance to talk to no other then Kutcha Edwards, this is one experience i know I will never forget; by the way my dad is very envious of me at the moment because of this.
Thank you for being able to give me the chance to experience indigenous and Australian music in this way.
The Big Notes concert at Hamer Hall last Wednesday was very entertaining and fun, but also inspirational and educational. I really enjoyed all the performers, especially Kutcha Edwards who brought a story to the stage as well as his voice. He showed two pictures, one of his father, and the other of his mother who became part of the audience. I liked that he didn’t care what others thought of him, but was just himself up on stage. Our class group were lucky enough to be involved in a workshop with him after the concert. He told us about his life, and being seperated from his parents in the stolen generation. He sung some beautiful songs with his omnichord which at times brought more feeling than his words. It was certainly a day I won’t forget.

Big Notes last Wednesday was a terrific experience. To be in a hall with peers our age that live for music (or as it seemed) as I do is an amazing feeling, and being presented with incredible music that had depth truly was inspirational at the least. We were presented with mind-blowing musicians who played their music from the heart, and only sang their music from life-experience. I’m sure my class benefited plenty more after attending the workshop with Kutcha Edwards afterwards, this motivated us to realise that we take many things for granted in life, and I’m sure this experience taught many students and teachers that in order to change the world around us; we need to stay true to ourselves.
Personally, i thought that Big Notes was a fantastic experiance.
It made me have a deeper appreation and understanding of the indeginous culture, while broaden my musical interests.
Kutcher Edwards was a very interesting yet inspiring man, and from the moment he stepped on stage the energey which was recieved was powerfully full of wisdom and a natural love of his culture. I believe that he made many students understand the difficulties which people face because of other peoples racist comments and thoughts. When he talked about his experiance growing up, it was utterly heart wrenching. His voice had a beautiful tone and all his songs which he performed, you could tell came straight from the heart.
Dan Sultan was another highlight of the day. The numbers which he sang all had a meaning comming from his experiances. Being a “Sultan” fan, I was dissapointed that he didnt sing “Your love is like a song”, which is my personal favorite and the very first song I heard about 4 years back. Although I did love his performance of “Old Fitzroy” which is a meaningful story and what I believe is him talking about his experiance. His voice is amazing; and he mesmerises the audience memebers. Dan Sultan and Scott Wilson have a great sense of humor which makes their performance incredibly entertaining.
I believe that going to Big Notes has underlined that when a listener listens to a song, you can have a different interpretation; this also depends on whether the artist uses a name within the song.

I was one of the many students who turned up for the Big Notes concert held last Wednesday at Hamer Hall. I have to say it was definately worth every second. With major artists performing such as Dan Sultan, Kutcha Edwards, Pez, MC Momo and many more it was a fantastic concert and i was so glad i was given the opportunity to go to it. The concert was set around the theme of change. Many of the singers sang songs in their native language. The last song sung was a Bob Marley song. Get up Stand up. Those lyrics were powerful. ‘Get up stand, stand up for your rights.’My school was also lucky enough to have a workshop with Kutcha after the show. This was my favourite part of the day as it really opened my eyes to the injustice of the stolen generation. Of course i knew abotu it before but Kutcha proved a very valid point. At the start of the session he said to all of us, “hand to me one of your most prized possesions” i handed him my watch reluctantly not knowing what he was going to do with it. He then talked about how hard it was for us to give up an object and how hard it would be to give up a child, a person. I am so thankful for this experiemce and i recommend everyone to go to other concerts like this
Our excursion to big notes on Wednesday was a great success and I really enjoyed going. I thought the whole show was a fantastic. The Candy . B hosted the event and introduced the opening act was The Rustys. I really enjoyed Kutcha Edwards act because he brought a very personal side to his performance by bring photo of his parents and family. I did like all the performers, another stand out being Dan Sultan. At the end everyone got up and sang get up stand up by Bob Marley. After the show we got to speak with Kutcha Edwards which was a very exciting and I enjoyed this most of all. I think it was a good experience and I liked being able to talk with him after the show.
I thought big notes was a great experience. The encouragement of spreading your messages and political beliefs is one that is very valid in today’s society and I think it’s important for idea to be spread to people like us through concerts like these.
Main stream music these days seems to be almost mass produced. The same sort of people are singing the same things and have no deeper meaning to the words and music. Big notes encouraged youth to start singing for what they believed in and to change this trend that main stream musicians have fallen into.
I really enjoyed all the guests and loved hearing their own thoughts on political songs and meanings to music. It was good hearing different ideas on the same issue and seeing other musicians being successful at what they do.
I thought Big Notes was an absolutely amazing concert, I loved it! We, the VCE Music students from Presentation College Windsor, were also lucky enough to have a workshop with Kutcha Edwards afterwards. We discussed his life, music and songwriting techniques, and he also sang for us.
I think the best thing about the concert was how passionate all the artists were about their music and the messages they were trying to convey. They really did create music to inspire change as well as being inspired by change.
Thank you so much to the creators of Big Notes and all of the musicians, it was such a fantastic experience that I will always remember. It was just such a shame that more people didn’t go!
