We, the VCE Music students from Presentation College Windsor, were also lucky enough to have a workshop with Kutcha Edwards afterwards. We discussed his life, music and songwriting techniques, and he also sang for us. I think the best thing about the concert was how passionate all the artists were about their music and the messages they were trying to convey. They really did create music to inspire change as well as being inspired by change. Thank you so much to the creators of Big Notes and all of the musicians, it was such a fantastic experience that I will always remember. It was just such a shame that more people didn’t go! The encouragement of spreading your messages and political beliefs is one that is very valid in today’s society and I think it’s important for idea to be spread to people like us through concerts like these. Main stream music these days seems to be almost mass produced. The same sort of people are singing the same things and have no deeper meaning to the words and music. Big notes encouraged youth to start singing for what they believed in and to change this trend that main stream musicians have fallen into. I really enjoyed all the guests and loved hearing their own thoughts on political songs and meanings to music. It was good hearing different ideas on the same issue and seeing other musicians being successful at what they do. I thought big notes was a great experience. I thought the whole show was a fantastic. The Candy . B hosted the event and introduced the opening act was The Rustys. I really enjoyed Kutcha Edwards act because he brought a very personal side to his performance by bring photo of his parents and family. I did like all the performers, another stand out being Dan Sultan. At the end everyone got up and sang get up stand up by Bob Marley. After the show we got to speak with Kutcha Edwards which was a very exciting and I enjoyed this most of all. I think it was a good experience and I liked being able to talk with him after the show. I have to say it was definately worth every second. With major artists performing such as Dan Sultan, Kutcha Edwards, Pez, MC Momo and many more it was a fantastic concert and i was so glad i was given the opportunity to go to it. The concert was set around the theme of change. Many of the singers sang songs in their native language. The last song sung was a Bob Marley song. Get up Stand up. Those lyrics were powerful. ‘Get up stand, stand up for your rights.’My school was also lucky enough to have a workshop with Kutcha after the show. This was my favourite part of the day as it really opened my eyes to the injustice of the stolen generation. Of course i knew abotu it before but Kutcha proved a very valid point. At the start of the session he said to all of us, "hand to me one of your most prized possesions" i handed him my watch reluctantly not knowing what he was going to do with it. He then talked about how hard it was for us to give up an object and how hard it would be to give up a child, a person. To be in a hall with peers our age that live for music (or as it seemed) as I do is an amazing feeling, and being presented with incredible music that had depth truly was inspirational at the least. We were presented with mind-blowing musicians who played their music from the heart, and only sang their music from life-experience. I’m sure my class benefited plenty more after attending the workshop with Kutcha Edwards afterwards, this motivated us to realise that we take many things for granted in life, and I’m sure this experience taught many students and teachers that in order to change the world around us; we need to stay true to ourselves. Big Notes last Wednesday was a terrific experience. Our class group were lucky enough to be involved in a workshop with him after the concert. He told us about his life, and being seperated from his parents in the stolen generation. He sung some beautiful songs with his omnichord which at times brought more feeling than his words. It was an amazing concert with extraordinary performances by wonderful artists. I would like to personally thank the artists that took the time to perform for us and also the people who helped organise and co-ordinate the event as it was an experience I believe I will always remember. After the concert we had a chance to talk to no other then Kutcha Edwards, this is one experience i know I will never forget; by the way my dad is very envious of me at the moment because of this. Thank you for being able to give me the chance to experience indigenous and Australian music in this way.
